Catching Up

I can’t believe we have been in this house for over a month now. Isn’t it funny how you fall into your rhythms again after being disrupted by a move or other trauma? There are still boxes in the living room. That’s the only room to have no furniture. (We need couches and chairs and a coffee table still.) So the boxes sit there until we can get around to them. Most of the boxes with my name on them are books. Since a couple of the bookshelves at the old place broke down we didn’t bring them along. So my boxes of books have no home yet. : -(

Can you believe I finally have an office/studio/craft room? I have my piano on an interior wall. I have my sewing stash, and crocheting/knitting stash, and scrapbooking stash, and bookshelves full of books, and a couple boxes full of books. My desk is a simple card table. That works for all my needs. There are two wonderful windows in this room. One faces north, where in the far distance I can see some hills that make the shape of one of those Easter Island gods laying down looking at the sky. And miles and miles and miles of sagebrush, and the wonderful sky. The other window faces west, and although I can see the sunset there, there is also a neighbor who lives very close on that side whose house blocks the view. He’s a nice neighbor so I can’t be too upset. As the winter gets colder, I appreciate that west window. It keeps the room warm from early afternoon until dark. It does get a bit of a glare, but I have curtains.

I hope you all had a wonderful Halloween, Samhain, and a sacred All Hollows night and day.

Meaning no disrespect to you, who enjoy it from either point of view, but October 31st has been NaNoWriMo prep day for me for the last 14 years. In fact, usually, the whole month of October is NaNoWriMo prep. But somehow I couldn’t settle my mind and making an outline or create my characters until the last couple days. But make no mistake. I knew I was going to be doing this again. For some reason, I didn’t win last year. I don’t remember why. I just didn’t get that into it, I guess. I can’t even remember what last years’ was about. But I do remember getting into the one the year before. It was fun.

Funny how during Nano, I always seem to find other things to do besides writing. I seem to be so much better at housework. There’s always a lot of research to do. Oh, and look at me, I’m blogging! But I did reach 1767 words last night. I usually stay up until the witching hour to start on a novel. Last night I got sleepy! But around two o’clock I was awake again. So I crept into my wonderful office, put on my headset and started writing via Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I did have a chance in the quiet of the night, to start my outline and do better research on my characters. The sad thing is, my outline only took me to chapter 5. And last nights’ writing took me all the way through chapter 1. Oops! Guess I’ve got a lot more planning to do!

Oh! I meant to tell you about life in the country with no car. When we lived in Reno, we didn’t have a car for quite a while. Mostly it was due to not having the money to fix the car we had and then to the landlords who wouldn’t let us keep it till we did have the money to fix it. But that was okay, there. We have a lot of good businesses really close that we could walk to or take the bus to. We got ourselves a little shopping cart to walk back and forth to and from the stores. Worked out quite well.

But now we are 1.7 miles from the nearest store, a little farther to our little library, and 2.8 miles to the post office. They don’t have door-to-door, mail delivery here in Christmas Valley. I’ve never lived in a place where they didn’t have door-to-door mail delivery, so this is an adjustment. Taking a walk a couple times a week is healthy and gaining room in my waistband. And…If you don’t have a box at the post office and they seem to have run out, you must go after three o’clock to pick up your mail. Because that’s when they receive the mail for those who don’t have a box. Which during this first month has not been easy. This is the desert after all. From three o’clock through about six is the hottest hours of the day. So we took our time and made sure we had water with us and learned to wear a hat. Now that it’s getting colder and the days are getting shorter, it’s becoming the coldest part of the day. I’m learning to adapt.

There is a Senior bus here, and the kind of dial-a-ride for seniors or the disabled. The bus takes us to Bend or La Pine or other areas a little ways away. The dial-a-ride people, pick us up at home and take us to the bus, or take is to doctor’s appointments or even to go visiting if we call them soon enough. That makes not having a car a lot easier.I think it’s a feature of Oregon and other states need to do this, too.

I’ll bet you catch everybody up to date on my little corner of the world. Happy November, and good luck with your NaNoWriMo’s!

Late Wake

I woke yesterday at 2pm. I got nothing done. Thought it was the stupidest thing I had done since I was a teen. But today I woke at 3pm. Geez. Okay, so part of it is the chronic fatigue/fibro that makes me so tired and once I get awake I try to do all I can to feel normal. But that means I see the sunrise at 5am and fight to go to sleep.

Reading or watching TV or movies on Netflix helps me hide from the pain while I’m awake. So, I finished reading Fingersmith last night and didn’t feel like sleeping because it was such an exciting last few chapters. (Review to follow.) Then I got involved in a Netflix series called Land Girls about ladies who helped in the war effort in England. I am not well versed on wars and only want to know what my sisters were doing while men proved whose bombs are bigger. I especially like one of the girls, Bea, I think is her name. She looks like “Rose” from Doctor Who. I’ve already forgotten both actresses names, but honestly they could be twins or at least sisters. Anyway, the show is interesting enough to keep my pain-brain busy while not being adrenaline driven.

Here it is, time to turn on the lights and I’ve barely eaten breakfast? Lunch? Blinner? Part of the problem is my hubby worked nights for so long that his clock is permanently screwed up. My biorhythms adjusted to what is natural to me–bedtime should be about 2am. And then extended to his. Grrr!

Okay, now to write my review.

20140625 Blog?
Well, it has been a rough day and so I am getting here as most people are going to sleep in our area. Oh well, such is my life. At least I’m writing, hey?

I am watching Treehouse Masters right now. Do any of you watch it? My hubby and I  dream of treehouse living. I know, old folks like us. We, who chose to live downstairs in this apartment because we didn’t want to climb the stairs with our disabilities. But how about a treehouse with some sort of elevator? I used to live in the upstairs apartment and loved how I felt up there. The only thing I didn’t like was that my cat of the time decided she could fly. She lived through that and many more years, nearly 18 years.

Another program I like, is Tiny House. Wait. That isn’t a program it is a documentary on Netflix. I think I could live like that. DH would probably not like it.

On the same thread, have you watched, You Live in What? I love that people are getting creative in their choices of domiciles. Of course, with this last show, I find most of these places take a small fortune to pull off. Still, the creativity these shows contain is contagious.

What I learn from the treehouses, Tiny House, and mobile homes are the multipurpose surfaces, and how to install the best storage for things. Tiny House encourages me to purge the many things collected over the years. That is a hard one for me as I haven’t the energy most of the time to gather up and remove all those extras that gather in a person’s home on a regular basis. Having a Kindle or two has made the book collecting less dust attracting, yet I still find I need more treebooks.–Hey, there’s an idea! A treehouse for treebooks! I wonder if that has ever been done? Now I just need a plot of land, with healthy trees and a windfall enough to pay the master to build it! With lots of storage and WiFi!

This is not what I wanted to write today. I wanted to continue my story with the character escaping the earthquake, bareback, on a friendly wild horse. Maybe tomorrow. Any suggestions for the story? Any constructive critiques?

Well, 390 words is not enough. If I were writing this on my desk, you could picture me banging my head on the desk. Luckily writing from a bed is much safer. Similar to writing in a padded room. ;-D

Oh, shoot! I just remembered! I forgot to write my review for Zen and the Art of Writing. I finished it two days ago. Guess that will add some words for me. So goes the mind of ADD. Catch me in the next post. <>

Blogging for Beginners – Answers to Your Frequently Asked Question by Mark Reinert
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

If you want to sell something. your books, ideas, or start a business, this book is for you. If you are like me and just want to learn how to blog, this book is quite helpful.

When I do decide I want to sell my novels, I will pull this one out of my archive and read it again.

On the other hand, it didn’t quite meet my needs as a new blogger. I am still left with more questions than answers. I know all new pursuits have a learning curve. I think I may be on the upward swing with mine, until WordPress changes the look of something I use on a daily basis, then I am back to ground level struggles.

In an attempt not to be negative, I think this may have enough information out there it is worth the try. It does have clickable links so read it on the Fire or a tablet to get best results.

It took me a while to read this, not because it is long, but because I wanted to absorb the information and see if I could apply it to my own blog. It would be a quick read straight through.

Senior Blogging?

Senior Blogging?. Glad to know I’m not alone!

A while back I got a big surprise from a blogger I admire for art and blogging against the odds. Thank you:

mcsirishart

This is a special award to someone who still thinks of herself as a newbie. I’m part of the family!!! 🙂

Smile! You’re at the best WordPress.com site ever

Thank you, again, mcsirishart.

Then, as if I shouldn’t gloat or just enjoy the glow, the very next day after receiving the nomination, I fell into a fibro-flare. In spite of that, I have gradually put together a list of some of my favorite blogging sites to nominate. It was very difficult to decide. That said, here are the

Rules:
1. Display the award logo on your blog.
2. Link back to the person who nominated you.
3. Nominate 10 others you see as having an impact on your WordPress experience and family
4. Let your 10 Family members know you have awarded them.
5. That is it!

And here are some of the many blogs that have inspired and encourage me in no particular order:
