The Litter of the Law (Mrs. Murphy, #22)The Litter of the Law by Rita Mae Brown
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I was given this book by a friend who read it on her vacation and left it with me when she visited. It took me so long as the font is rather small so I could only take it in bits and pieces. There was enough dialogue to break up the page so I could read it in tiny doses.

The book kept my interest. I did want to find out more about the farming and life of these farm people. I loved reading about the characters. I found the Native American research interesting though it added to the shame of how our founders dealt with the original inhabitants of our country.

I absolutely loved the drawings. Yay for adult books that have pictures!

What I found annoying and distracting from the story: talking animals. But I suppose that is where the ‘cozy’ comes in for this mystery.

I love Halloween but I never go to ‘haunted house’ features because I worry that real blood could be involved with no one knowing. And I hate things jumping out at me to make me scream or be startled. This book just reinforced those fears. It is what made this a gruesome mystery rather than cozy. But others of you may love it and can read it with the grain of salt that is implied. I’m glad to finally be finished and to pass it to the friends of the library.

The Night WorldThe Night World by Mordicai Gerstein
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This won’t go down as a favorite for me. But I think it would have been a good one for my young children. We aren’t good sleepers in my family. We like to stay awake forever. Darkness does not mean the end of the day. It just means you need other sources of light.

Pages and pages of dark pictures are annoying to me, like a lack of color. Still, if you live in the country like we did back then, and how I live now, knowing what lives in the darkness, as far as the animal life you don’t see in the daytime, that might be outside is a great way to teach about nocturnal animals.

If a child is having problems with fear of the dark, this might be a fun book to bring about that discussion.

As for me, I read it late at night it stayed with me through my insomnia. When I just can’t handle that darkness staring at me, I find I need the colorful pages at the end of the book. So I will pull up a nature show on Netflix. A soothing narrator keeps me away from the millions of thoughts, the colors and life help me relax and soon I am ready to sleep. Too bad we didn’t have such things when my kids were young. Meanwhile, a book with the promise of sunrise could help all of us. And for that, it is worth buying for some families.

Cats and a Couch

This may be an all day project.  Because Teddy is still on my bed:

Cats are like Children, they never do what you expect them to. Take the Before Couch (BC?) Plarn (plastic yarn) laundry bag that I stuffed with plastic bags to crochet with later for moving here. The Cats adopted it and it was soon known as the Bag-Bag Chair.

20170404_115429

Because I wanted keep the inner bags as free of Cat hair and dust, I Covered it.

20170404_115452

I know! Pink blanket in a yellow room! Ugh! Geez! What we do for Cats!!! Oh, and see that pillow next to the bag-bag Chair? It used to be for my neck. It hurt my neck more so I gave it to the Cats. Let’s see if I can get another view:

No, Kali, ‘D’ day is tomorrow! But that is her showing off one of her beds.

So here is the new Couch, mostly unCovered (had to take this quickly before zoo finds out.)

Pretty amazing for free, don’t you think? (Thanks to Lily and Monica!) That is not a stain in the middle, it is my shadow. It’s a very Comfy Couch! Nice and Clean! So let’s keep it that way!

Whew! Just in time!

Rosey thinks I straightened the Covers just for her! Silly Cat!

No, Kali, you get tomorrow!

She says, Butt!

Meanwhile, Teddy Can’t be bothered! He did switch positions!

Cats, you’re welcome! Teddy at one end and

Rosey at the other. That is usually where they are since the couch arrived. Only the day I wanted to share it were they elsewhere!

Catacombs (Tales of the Barque Cats #2)Catacombs by Anne McCaffrey

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I am so glad I was able to pick this up from my local electronic library, both the Kindle and the audio versions. I’m also glad I was able to purchase and read the first book in this series. It made this book easier to understand to know what happened before. But I think it might’ve been understandable to read it without the first book and still get it. Oh, how I miss Anne McCaffrey!

My favorite parts were the polydactyl cats who are proven to be the earliest space explorers landing in Egypt helping with the engineering of the pyramids, etc. With so many fingers and toes, and trained to use them in the ways humans use their fingers they were able to do far more than humans could.

This is my kind of space travel sci-fi getting to know other planets at the creatures. Getting to know the process of being in outer space for long periods of time. Done the way only Anne McCaffrey could.

If you get the chance please read these two books they may seem silly on the surface but they are deeper than they seem.

Catalyst (Tales of the Barque Cats, #1)Catalyst by Anne McCaffrey

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

While perusing my local library system’s site of ebooks and audios I saw the second book in this series by one of my favorite authors, Anne McCaffrey. Well, I hate starting in the middle of a series so I bought the first one and the Audible version to go with it.

If you love cats and space travel adventures, this is the book for you. I thought it was going to be too much fluff, a childish book, a book about kitty cats. I was wrong. This gave a new perspective about cats and space travel.

I just happen to have a polydactyl black cat and I have wondered if, with the right training, all those toes could be used like our hands. Could she be a Barque cat? Could she fly a space ship? My husband and I spend our retired days trying to read our cats’ and new dog’s minds. Sometimes we think we know them pretty well. We provide the words to the bubbles over their heads. Just imagine if instead of watching the mice for entertainment if they could kill the space alien?

Anyway, this was fun and I didn’t stop between the two books and got right into book two. I have to admit to wishing there was more! R.I.P. Anne McCaffrey. I miss you!

The World According to Bob: The Further Adventures of One Man and His Street-Wise CatThe World According to Bob: The Further Adventures of One Man and His Street-Wise Cat by James Bowen

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Warmed my soul! I have to thank my friend, Cher, for recommending this book to me.

This was actually book two. My library didn’t have book one on Kindle or OverDrive so I’ll have to wait until I have the money to buy it. Still, I didn’t feel lost. Bob continues to be the author’s savior and best friend. I can certainly understand how furry friends help us all. And Bob looks like my Teddy! He has helped me when I feel my worst with my fibromyalgia.

Though the title is The World According to Bob, it is more or less the story of James Bowen and how his cat has helped him. He doesn’t try to get into Bob’s head and try to understand things from the cat’s point of view. This stays with James’s interpretation of the world while being buddies with a wonderful feline.

I recommend this book to all. It is heartwarming. We all need that kind of tale from time to time. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Sacred Siamese: Essential Care Guide For Siamese Cat Owners From A Siamese Lover: A HISTORY OF THE SIAMESE BREED, A DETAILED CARE GUIDE FOR SIAMESE CAT ... - INCLUDING KITTEN, RESCUES, COLOR PICTURESSacred Siamese: Essential Care Guide For Siamese Cat Owners From A Siamese Lover: A HISTORY OF THE SIAMESE BREED, A DETAILED CARE GUIDE FOR SIAMESE CAT … – INCLUDING KITTEN, RESCUES, COLOR PICTURES by Jessica Thompson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I love Siamese cats! I had one for about 16 years and here at a decade later I still miss her so much. Our kitty was a rescue and wasn’t pure-breed. But the pictures in this book made me miss her even more. I would love to take in another Siamese someday.

This book was full of photos and information about this marvelous breed. I learned a few things. But I have to admit that I came out of the book still confused about the words points and seal-points. That may be my own inability to read and retain information properly–or it may be that it wasn’t clear in the book. Still it is worth enjoying and learning what you can.

Beautiful Black Cats: A collection of photographs of black catsBeautiful Black Cats: A collection of photographs of black cats by Precious The Cat

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

AS an animal lover I love looking at picture books about different animals. As a black cat owner I LOVE pictures of cats like mine. Since my black cat was a rescue kitty, we didn’t get to see her as a kitten, so some of these pictures could easily be what she looked like when she was tiny.

The book leaves me smiling. But I think it might have been better to not have the credits right under the picture but tuck it away in the back so that the photos can stand alone. It was the only thing I didn’t like about the book.
